The Arab-Islamic Joint Summit commenced today in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the participation of Arab and Islamic countries, including Morocco.
The summit aims to tackle the escalating situation in Gaza amid Israel’s genocide and present a collective response from Arab and Islamic countries.
The head of the Moroccan government Aziz Akhannouch is representing King Mohammed VI at the summit.
Akhannouch is leading a Moroccan delegation consisting of several diplomats, notably the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita.
The summit replaces both the initially planned “Extraordinary Arab Summit” and the “Exceptional Islamic Summit,” with a focus on the dire situation in Gaza.
Foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries, including Morocco, gathered in Riyadh today for a preparatory meeting ahead of the summit.
Nasser Bourita led the Moroccan delegation, which included Morocco’s Ambassador to Egypt Ahmed Tazi and the country’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mustapha Mansouri, among others.
The meeting saw the participation of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha.
The gathering focused on drafting a comprehensive resolution which is set to be presented at the ongoing summit.
The resolution will put forth a unified stance expressing the collective will of Arab and Islamic nations to put an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza.
The new cycle of violence, which began on October 7, has claimed the lives of nearly 11,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and injured tens of thousands of others.
Israeli attacks have caused massive devastation in Gaza, destroying more than half of the region’s residential units and bombing several hospitals.
